Self Exams

Self Exams

I was recently chatting with a friend who works as a nurse and she mentioned that due to Covid-19, many fewer women are coming in for checkups and thus won’t get a regular breast exam. Today I’m sharing a few resources on self exams to help women check things out at home. I will fully admit, pre-cancer I did not do self exams. My thinking was always A. I’m never going to get cancer (drunk on youth & immortality) and B. I would never be able to tell what an actual lump felt like. I’m here to dispel both those myths. :) Regarding the first point,  even if you’re young and your likelihood of getting breast cancer is low, it can’t hurt to know what your normal breasts feel like to compare against. And re the second point, a cancerous lump does feel different than your normal breast tissue. I felt the lump in my breast after noticing my nipple inverting and immediately could tell it didn’t feel right or normal.

The organization Know Your Lemons has great graphics that show signs to look for and risk factors.

The good news is, when breast cancer is caught early it’s incredibly treatable, so go ahead and feel those lemons.
