On Resilience

On Resilience

I’ve always found nature to be powerfully healing and shortly before I began treatment, I came across what I interpreted as a profound sign on a hike near our house. I was on a trail that had suffered destruction from a fire two years previously and only recently re-opened. As I hiked through the lush forest and waterfalls, I came to a grove of black, burnt trees with the most beautiful, bright green undergrowth. I was immediately moved and struck by the realization that yes, we were going to burn my body down, but then there would be renewal, regrowth, and ultimately healing. I would come back different and that was going to be okay because I would be alive.
